18 Jul 2016: Red Hot Chili Peppers/"Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Covers" (2012) http://musiccouldbebetter.blogspot.com/2016/07/julio-and-case-of-missing-fortune.html
teenager in love gets real annoying real fast keidis's voice does NOT work for search and destroy; it has no edge
the cover of i get around is nice (and not annoying like the original) suffragette city sounds kind of like keidis doesn't care at all; not sure if that's good or bad
this ep is a decent listen but nothing you'll remember in a week if you like rhcp i'd recommend giving it a shot but don't expect their best work

| 18 Jul 2016: Fleetwood Mac/"Tusk" (1979) http://musiccouldbebetter.blogspot.com/2009/03/real-savage-like.html
dear god help me looking at my list of albums to review this one had a note saying "please god help me" so at least i'm consistent
DON'T TELL ME I NEVER DO ANYTHING FOR YOU
beginning with over and over was not the best decision it's such a "whatever" song and it's way too long considering
the ledge is just like a hoe-down right there on the album yeehaw
that's enough for me is the best song on the album
i remember once purple made a video that was brown eyes for fifteen minutes and i watched the entire thing so i kind of hate this song now "can we create the most annoying song possible?" "LET'S TRY AND SEE"
i know i'm not wrong is just old hat by this point someone create i know i'm not wrong gnorw ton m'i wonk i
i don't get all the hubbub about the title track it's almost impressively "whatever"
so why did i have to listen to this album again it's ridiculously mediocre |

| like I said, rite of passage I enjoy the experience of the album. It's especially fun remembering that, when this album came out in the late 70s, it cost the equivalent of $50, and it still sold like crazy. There are a lot of "what" songs, but there are also some amazing songs. Shame you don't like Nicksy. My fave songs are Tusk, Sara, and That's All For Everyone |

this is another self-release many of these tracks (including the title track) would be rerecorded for 1997's middle of nowhere
taylor and isaac's voices on the first track go HORRIBLY together oil and water
ballad mmmbop? what the fuck it's still the same great song as always of course, maybe even better
soldier's opening rips off children's story by slick rick
giving the album two mmmbops was a great decision mmmbop always puts me in a good mood |

| 24 Jul 2016: Backstreet Boys/"Backstreet's Back" (1997) http://musiccouldbebetter.blogspot.com/2009/03/all-right.html
This album's artwork would also be used for the US self-titled album, sans the Backstreet's Back lettering. The thing about the US album is that it's set the way my brain recognises these tracks in terms of order. Like, I always expect it to go We've Got it Goin' On / Quit Playin' Games / As Long as You Love Me / Everybody / All I Have to Give / Anywhere for You / filler track I always skip / I'll Never Break Your Heart / Darlin' / Get Down / who even cares after that But when it doesn't, it's like a bad speedbump for my brain. I noticed this on the debut as well. To my brain, it's almost like someone shuffled around The Abbey Road Medley.
So, when I was a kid, I had this VHS tape called something like "Backstreet Boys: All Access", which showed the making of the music videos for Everybody and As Long as You Love Me, with some concert footage and the videos of Quit Playin' Games and We've Got it Goin' On as extras, plus a preview of All I Have to Give's video, which wasn't released yet. I played the fuck out of that VHS tape for whatever reason. Buy the DVD on Amazon for the low, low price of $100!
This album starts with what may have been the best opening trio of songs ever committed to record if they hadn't fucked it up. Of course, it all starts with the title track, which is one of the band's signature tracks to this day. It's just a really fun song. The version on this album isn't the same as the version on the US album; it's shorter and has an extra vocal section sung by Nick.
As Long as You Love Me has always been my favourite Backstreet Boys song. It's perfect. But the version on this album is completely different, with a more pronounced drum beat, and the other instrumentation is lower. I don't like this version as much. It's just weird. The piano and guitar are very important to the song, and this version sounds empty without them. And the third verse starts later, which threw me way off. 2/10 version of a 10/10 song.
All I Have to Give has really grown on me over the years, and it's definitely in my top three Backstreet Boys songs. After that, though, we get into the songs I'm unfamiliar with.
That's the Way I Like It is very standard pop music, but it's performed well. 10,000 Promises is on the other end of that spectrum. It's standard as fuck, and the performance doesn't do it any favours.
Like a Child takes a bit to build up to being good. AJ's first verse is the lowpoint of the song, and led me to believe that it just won't be a good song at all. The chorus could be better, as well. Hey Mr. DJ has the most annoying instrumentation I've heard in a good while. No fucking clue how this made the US album, and I DEFINITELY don't have a clue why they slotted it between Anywhere for You and I'll Never Break Your Heart. And the falsetto "HEY mister DJ" repeating in the middle of the song? My ears are bleeding.
Set Adrift on Memory Bliss is a cover of a hip-hop song, turned into a ballad. I didn't like this song at all when I was younger, but I like it A LOT now. Best non-hit (for this group anyway) on the album, definitely. That's What She Said is notable for being the first of the group's songs to be written (and produced) by one of the group's members, Brian in this case. This was before the whole "that's what SHE said" thing happened. It's a really good song I'm not biased at all really
Good Girl is one of those songs that's just like why All the worst traits of '90s music with a dumb concept. I have no idea how THIS song made the US album. They chose the two worst songs on this album for the fucking thing. This is why I didn't review these earlier, because I thought "fuck, if Good Girl and Mr. DJ are what they chose for the US album, the rest must be unbearably awful". Fucking hell.
The album ends with If I Don't Have You, which is a nice ballad. There was a song called If You Stay that was recorded when they recorded Set Adrift, which appeared on a film soundtrack and not the album. It's just okay, but that means it's already better than two tracks on the album.
So, this album is good. The two Godawful tracks hurt it a lot, but I still enjoyed it overall. Not as good as the debut, but still nice. I hope Millennium doesn't continue the downward motion. |
