11 Jun 2024: Aerosmith/"1971: The Road Starts Hear" (2021)

an early set of recordings for what would later become the self-titled debut
(i would have done this one earlier, but it wasn't added to spotify until 2022, by which time it was buried in my albums list and i completely forgot about it)
some songs are missing (Make It, One-Way Street, Write Me a Letter), two songs didn't appear on the self-titled (Major Barbara, Reefer-Head Woman, the latter of which would appear on 1979's Night in the Ruts)

begins with a filler intro with chatting and some random playing (tuning up?)
somebody is the first proper song, and, surprise, i don't remember the original at all, so i gave it another listen
the 1971 version is about a minute longer, and has a much weaker sound, mostly due to the (apparently) missing vocal harmonies
steven tyler's "doo doot doo"s over the guitar solo are still present, but not as confident
trimming that minute off was a good decision
(still one of the weaker songs on the debut)

the cover of reefer-head woman was also trimmed by over a minute for the album

walkin' the dog is the first interesting thing here
the slightly slower tempo and completely different vocal phrasing in the chorus completely changes the feel of the song
i might prefer this one to the original, but the middle section with the recorder? makes that a little more blurry
reminds me a lot of the rolling stones which may be intentional

movin' out is just a weaker version of the song; no major frills, no major spills
upon listening to major barbara, i immediately understand why it wasn't on the album
it's not bad, but it's not great and doesn't fit the tone

the vocals on dream on sound so weak
it's a powerful ballad, but the demo does not do it justice
the lyrics are a bit different; i kind of like "sing with me, this mournful dirge" instead of "all the things come back to you"
the guitar steps all over the vocals at points here

ends with mama kin
if i went to an aerosmith show and this is what i heard, i'd be livid
like what the hell

let's celebrate thirty years of the blue album by rerecording four of its tracks in a lazy way
buddy holly sounds like rivers is simply tired of this song after thirty years
i like the guitar tone however; nothing extraordinary, but it's nice
undone is a little better for rivers, but there is still no reason to listen to this over the original

say it ain't so is kind of cool since rivers is just brute-forcing his way through the song
surf wax america is better than the first two at least

this EP has little reason to exist, and i will likely forget it even does in a week

it's like dave mustaine or geddy lee in that i had to get used to it

this isn't the band's best album, but it's a good one
