the first foo fighters album since the death of drummer taylor hawkins
as bad as it sounds, i hope this tragic event kicked the band back into gear
their last two albums were
existent
sonic highways was frustrating; for every good song, it had a bad one of equal deviation from mediocrity
it had their best song (what did i do/god as my witness) and their worst song (i am the river)

well
it's better than the last two albums certainly
their best since wasting light
i might do something unprecedented and
come back to this album in the coming weeks

the teacher is the band's longest song at ten minutes
it's not bad
everyone on RYM seems to like the final track, rest
i understand why they would; it's the most boring track, thus in-character for them

the title track and nothing at all are the immediate highlights
the rest might grow on me i don't know we'll see

the album fared a lot better on the second listen (unlike Sonic Highways, where it was exactly as i had previously stated)
nothing at all is still the highlight, of course, but most of the songs gained a better ranking on the relisten (see them side-by-side at the MCCB link)
for what it's worth, i intentionally avoided looking at my old ratings during the relisten (i did remember calling nothing at all and the title track the highlights however)

a pretty mediocre effort overall; i expect more from these guys
tracks 5-7 are about what i wanted but that's just a third of the album

this is absolutely awful

the fourth track is so annoyingly bad that i skipped it
i rarely skip tracks in these reviews, but i wasn't going to listen to six minutes of that
who decided to but robo-voice in an avenged sevenfold song?
the band needs to lay off the drugs or get back on the drugs or just stop

my life would have been better if i'd never listened to this album
first 0.5 of the year
if i'd waited just one more day to listen to it, it would have been exactly one year after my last one
shame
