| Starting a conversation based on Green's review of Pokémon Moon - In the review, Green mentioned the worst parts of each game. I'd like to do the same but also add in the best parts of each game. The review was mostly focused on story/plot events and not game mechanics, so I'll try to keep the same (with certain exceptions) Worst - - Spoiler:
R/B/Y - Rock Tunnel (absolutely agree) G/S/C - The Puzzle under the Department Store R/S/E - Norman FR/LG - Rock Tunnel (absolutely agree pt 2) D/P/PT - Anything with Mt Coronet HG/SS - Voltorb Flip B/W - Even though team plasma has the 7 sages, you only ever face one of them. Also the big city is impossible to navigate. B2/W2 - The entire plot is Team Plasma, and the gyms and Pokémon league is secondary. The ending is especially annoying X/Y - Shabboneau Castle (such a waste of time). Also the need to use EXP Share unless you want endless grinding. OR/AS - Norman S/M - The whole last island, but most importantly the cutscenes US/UM - There are somehow more cutscenes, and more dependence on Ultra Beasts. Also, the dimensional wormhole mini game and everything associated with it is just weird.
Best - - Spoiler:
R/B/Y - When Gary beats you to becoming the Champion (even though it makes no sense why they just magically add a 5th position to the E4 which continues for all future games) G/S/C - The moment you step into Kanto for the first time R/S/E - All of the non-linear routes that weren't needed for game completion e.g. everything between meteor falls and rustboro, everything west of pacifidlog town, the route south of mt pyre) FR/LG - Sevii Islands :$ D/P/PT - The physical special split is so vitally groundbreaking that all other plot is meaningless. But I did really enjoy the aesthetic of the totally snowed in town. HG/SS - It's the perfect game 10/10 B/W - Unlimited Use TMs. Also, I liked the gimmick of N/team plasma overtaking the E4. B2/W2 - Pokestar Studios. Also, all the call backs to B/W, including Cheren being a gym leader. X/Y - Battle Chateau, and also when you face all of your rivals on the bridge just before E4 OR/AS - The updated abandoned ship, plus national dex before becoming Champion S/M - Ride Pokémon, and I personally loved the trial battles US/UM - It's basically the same as S/M but better. They made Lusamine not so much of a crazed villain, so that's cool I guess

| I was going to talk about the best parts of each game, but it really boils down the same nearly every time. The time of the game you spend with the middle evolution of your starter is the best part of the game. It almost always works out this way. (until I remember that Rock Tunnel exists) if I have to choose one exact moment: - best parts of each game:
R/B/Y - Immediately after Rock Tunnel, when you can travel pretty much anywhere G/S/C - Going to Kanto R/S/E - Volcano route with the ashy grass (plus the volcano) FR/LG - see R/B/Y D/P/P - I remember really liking Sunyshore City, but I was probably just happy to be out of the Distortion World HG/SS - Rematching every gym leader B/W - Meeting Cynthia B2/W2 - Pokestar Studios (100% agree) [Pokémon World Tournament is a close second] X/Y - The problem here is that pretty much all of X/Y was very good, but none of it was GREAT (nothing stands out) OR/AS - Being able to find all kinds of legendaries in the postgame (hidden Pokémon as a mechanic was great too for similar reasons) S/M - Team Skull Town
I'll put my worst list here, too, so no one has to check back at the other thread if they want to see it: - worst parts of each game:
R/B/Y - Rock Tunnel (FUCK FLASH) G/S/C - Radio Tower R/S/E - Underwater dive cave with Team Magma/Aqua FR/LG - Rock Tunnel (FUCK FLASH) Platinum - Distortion World HG/SS - Kimono Girls/Whirl Islands/Tin Tower (the #1 reason why I will NEVER play SoulSilver again) B/W - all of it B2/W2 - any time Hugh shows up X/Y - Korrina's battle of Lucarios (dumbass bullshit) OR/AS - Delta Episode (fuck that cunt) S/M - Lana's Trial (fuck that cunt)
To address some of yours: - your worsts:
I am glad we agree on the most important thing: Rock Tunnel is THE WORST I was including the puzzle under the department store as part of the Radio Tower. It is really annoying. Norman isn't as bad as Whitney, honestly. Learning to work around Truant is actually pretty cool once you get the hang of it. Mt. Coronet was a mistake Voltorb Flip sucks on an actual DS, but it's pathetic on an emulator. To the point where I vastly prefer it to the previous games' system of "buy the coins because slot machines are horrible". What was wrong with the ending of B2/W2? You just fight Iris. Lamest champion, sure, but better than N's battle of who cares in the original B/W. The castle in X/Y was boring and unnecessary, but at least it's short.
- your bests:
I was actually thinking about how Gen I used up all the good twists. If they'd set up people like Lance, Steven, Cynthia, etc. as champion since day one, then in game four or five had your rival become champion? Twist of the century. Same with the evil team leader being a gym leader. I do greatly appreciate R/S/E's twist with Wally being the true rival, though. Agree for R/S/E, those were great The Sevii Islands uh existed (I almost listed the Sevii Islands Team Rocket hideout as the worst part of FR/LG; it has the absolute WORST movement panels ever) Unlimited use TMs were a godsend, as was the little message asking if you want to use another repel. The new abandoned ship was a 10/10, definitely I didn't actually like ride Pokémon for the sake of liking ride Pokémon. I only liked them because I've lived through the alternative.

| Norman is my least favorite because the only thing between Flannery and Norman are like 6 trainers in the desert and the 7 (?) trainers in the gym itself, and the difficulty level of dealing with the Vigoroth and Slaking is way up compared to Torkoal. Another comparison might be Jasmine being directly after Chuck, but at least you have the option of going to lake of rage (assuming you didn't go that way first). With Whitney, at least there's plenty of grinding areas to visit before the battle (All the way up to national park). Side note - I find Claire to be much harder to beat than Whitney My comment on B2/W2's ending was more about the end of the Plasma story specifically, when you go into the ship that froze the one city after spending an endless amount of time traversing a mountain or something. Plus the "fusion" Pokémon with Kyruem are abominations. I was on the fence about including both Gym Leader Rematches from HG/SS and also the Volcano route as best parts. Even though I never really did it, the idea of collecting the ash to create items is a neat idea |-) |

| I never really thought about wanting to grind between Flannery and Norman. As far as Norman over Whitney, I still say Norman is easier to deal with if you've got Blaziken or Swampert, which isn't unlikely by that point. With Whitney, you're just going to get bodied by rollout with Quilava or even Croconaw. The Jasmine comparison is way off, though. Jasmine is a joke if you have Typhlosion or Feraligatr. Then again, I always go to the Lake of Rage/Pryce first, so. - tangent:
The pacing of the game is just much better if you go east from Ecruteak rather than west. Order of events going east: Falkner Team Rocket Bugsy Whitney Morty Team Rocket Pryce Chuck Jasmine Team Rocket Clair
Order of events going west: Falkner Team Rocket Bugsy Whitney Morty Chuck Jasmine Team Rocket Pryce Team Rocket Clair
And in HG/SS, you can't even go to Blackthorn before the radio tower if you're not into the Team Rocket thing at the moment.
I agree that Clair is way harder than Whitney, because Kingdra is a ridiculous Pokémon by Gen II standards. Its only weakness is dragon and the only dragon move you can get by that point is dragon rage, which always does 40 damage. Why did they think that was a good idea I agree about Kyurem's forms, 100%. The main problem with your other statement is that I absolutely hated Team Plasma every time they showed up, so one appearance wasn't any worse than another. Well, aside from that one time - that one time:
Hugh spends the whole goddamn game asking anyone with ears about his sister's damn Purrloin. An extremely common gutter trash Pokémon, and not even a shiny one. The thing that absolutely drove me up the wall is that the Team Plasma guy, who has stolen hundreds and hundreds of Pokémon, remembered exactly which Purrloin he'd stolen from that one city from that one girl years prior. Absolutely terrible and insulting writing. Still not as bad as Zinnia, though.
It's a shame the flutes are useless, since collecting the ash was such a cool effect for a GBA game. If they'd made the ash into, like, Flamethrower TMs, then everyone would have spent hours doing it. |
