Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity (2020) - Switch
The original Hyrule Warriors was a crossover encompassing the majority of the Zelda series, bringing ideas from each game to create an original narrative. It's one of the best Warriors games without a doubt.
Age of Calamity is, instead, a prequel to Breath of the Wild, and only features characters and concepts from that game, as well as a few new ones to finish it up. This is the story of 100 years before BOTW, where everyone lost.

+ Every character has his own set of rune attacks
+ Impa's moveset is ridiculous (once you figure it out anyway)
+ Link's spear moveset holy shit
+ Impa is CUTE CUTE CUTE
+ Robbie is 10/10 (I just wish he was playable)
- I absolutely hate this version of Princess Zelda (worst voice, ugly, annoying)
- The way new clothing for Link is unlocked is just retarded in some cases (Sheikah shirt? here you go bro / Sheikah pants? 100% COMPLETION IN THIS REGION)
- The Great Fairies are just too big; controlling them is annoying
- The missions where you pilot divine beasts are just boring
- The FUCKING missions where you pilot the FUCKING divine beats are FUCKING boring
- STOP MAKING ME DO THAT
- S T O P

7.5/10
could have been much higher without the stupid fucking divine beast missions
original Hyrule Warriors was better

Persona 5: Royal (2020) - PS4
I wasn't going to play this this year, but it was $20 on Black Friday, so I took a look at the changes they made. Since Baton Pass is now just something everyone has from the start, the playthrough will be much, much better than the first time. They also reduced my biggest complaint about the game: the cat telling me constantly to go to bed. If only they'd gotten rid of him and Makoto entirely.
Since I played vanilla P5 with English voices, I am going to play Royal with Japanese voices. (Morgana having Pikachu's voice makes him much more bearable)
I am going to divide this into categories for the sake of simplicity, so you can skip over my complaints that were likely also in my vanilla P5 review.

THINGS THAT ARE THE SAME AS IN VANILLA PERSONA 5:
+ Hard carried by the aesthetic
+ Some of the best turn-based combat I've played
+ I would like to apologise to Kaneshiro's bank as a level; it's not actually that bad at all (might have something to do with me clearing every palace in the minimum number of trips this time)
- Upon reflection, I do not like the casino intro (or, rather, I don't like having to do it twice I guess)
- I definitely don't like the prison framing device cutaways (the pacing is slow enough without these)
- Ryuji's Japanese voice actor sounds like Kermit the Frog when he gets angry or excited
- The game still goes massively downhill at the third palace and doesn't recover for a long-ass time
- I can't believe they had Makoto act like a fucking cunt stalking me for so long, then expect me to be okay with her hijacking the entire team dynamic
- Makoto charges headfirst into a den of yakuza and gets her ass kicked and then Yusuke says "wouldn't she be perfect as our advisor?"
- NO SHE'S A FUCKING RETARD
- Why the FUCK can't I use my burgers in the middle of battle?!
- Why does Futaba's bedroom door swing outward
- The intro to Okumura's palace with Morgana running off like a little bitch desperately needed to be completely overhauled from the ground-up (it wasn't changed at all)
- Absolutely hate the casino palace's music

NEW ADDITIONS FOR ROYAL:
+ GUN AMMO NOW REFILLS AFTER EVERY BATTLE (10/10 CHANGE (and the story justification for it makes total sense to the point where the original P5 makes less sense))
+ EVERYONE STARTS WITH BATON PASS
+ You can use more of your nights without the cat telling you to go to bed (and you can do things inside Leblanc after a metaverse trip from the start)
+ Tycoon is a fun way to pass the time (real time, not precious game calendar time)
+ The darts minigame is finally a use of motion controls that doesn't make me want to die
+ The change to the "turn yourself in" scene was nice
+ Kasumi, Maruki, and the new third semester (aka January) are really good
+ Having the new area of Mementos go upward was smart
- The intro immediately introduces Kasumi and fellates the fuck out of her (SHE'S SO COOL!!! gag me)
- The way Jose's shop appears is annoying

To put it bluntly: This is the version of Persona 5 that should be played by anyone interested, be it for a first playthrough or a replay. I will not be able to go back to vanilla after playing this. Having more nights to spend is a fucking godsend that makes the story beat sections in the middle of the game far, FAR more tolerable.
Putting the new dungeon at the end may seem stupid, but it's actually brilliant. People bitch about Marie in Persona 4 Golden (which I have admittedly never played), so if you don't like the new chapter, ignore it. Who cares, right?

On another note: playing Persona 5 again has made me retroactively like Yakuza 7 less. Persona 5's combat gameplay is simply better. I'd much rather new game plus P5R than play Yakuza 7 again. I am legitimately glad I played the games in the order I did. If Yakuza 8 is a JRPG again, I may end up just wishing it was Persona 6. I am retroactively putting Yakuza 7 down to an 8/10.

ranking the dungeons from a pure gameplay perspective:
Kamoshida

Shido

Futaba
Sae
Okumura

ranking the dungeons from a story perspective:
Kamoshida
Madarame
the new one
Sae

Shido
Futaba
Kaneshiro
Okumura

so, to sum it all up:
FUCK OKUMURA'S PALACE
8.5/10
playtime at the end was around 82 hours

Persona 5 Scramble: The Phantom Strikers (2021) - PS4
A year after its Japanese release, we Americans finally get our hands on P5S. Scramble is a direct sequel to Persona 5 (not Royal), which takes place during summer vacation. The Phantom Thieves travel across Japan and have to take down criminals once again. Except this time it's an action RPG instead of a turn-based one. It's made by Koei's Omega Force, so, with my recent vast experience with Omega Force's catalogue, I am more than ready. At the end, I will explain how this game stands up as a Persona 5 sequel and as a Dynasty Warriors game.
Last year, I downloaded the Japanese demo for Switch, and had a great time despite not being able to read Japanese. I have been waiting for this one for too long.

+ Takes all the unique things about Persona's combat system and converts them to a real-time system in a very fun way
+ Sophia and Zenkichi are both 10/10 additions to the cast
+ The final boss is better than vanilla P5's final boss (not better than Maruki though)
+ The music is GREAT, as if there was any doubt (not just the hard rock remixes of regular P5 songs, but also the new town themes and such) (that being said, HARD ROCK LAST SURPRISE)
+ Radical, dude
+ HEE HO
+ Legitimately glad they gave Jack at least a little spotlight (and Futaba's hee ho puns were perfect)
+ The choices of which characters to give a spotlight dungeon to were perfect (Ann, Yusuke, and Haru, the most forgotten characters during the story of the original)
- The third boss is just weird (why did she become so fat? why is her gimmick eating? saying "it's a dog eat dog world" isn't good enough)
- They clearly wanted the seven deadly sins analogy for the bosses again, but, once again, gluttony is completely forced, just like the original Persona 5
- The stupid-ass Kyoto hot springs scene
- Called the "surprise villain" twist the moment we met that character (both times if you count the REALLY obvious one)

Basically, it's exactly what I wanted.
9/10

Main team was Joker / Haru / Sophia / Zenkichi (rotating in Yusuke, Ryuji, and Ann as needed)
playtime: 32.5 hours

Kingdom Hearts HD II.8 Final Chapter Prologue (2017) - PS4
okay let's talk about this one
Kingdom Hearts HD II.8 Final Chapter Prologue, or KHHD2.8FCP for short (or "KH2.8" for shorter), is a 2017 collection of Kingdom Hearts Dream Drop Distance (originally for 3DS in 2013), a brand new KH3 gameplay preview chapter that explains why Mickey wasn't wearing a shirt at the end of KH1, and a collection of cutscenes to explain to us filthy Americans what happened in the Japanese-only mobile game.
This came out for $60, and I didn't want to replay DDD at the time. So I skipped all this and went into KH3 having skipped 0.2 and Unchained X Back Cover or whatever. I noticed as I was playing it that I had fucked up, and skipping anything in the Kingdom Hearts series - aka Nomura's Wild Ride - is a death setence. I weep for those who only played KH1, 2, and 3, and had no clue what the fuck an Aqua is or what it means for her to be already half Xehanort. Now if you'll excuse me, I am going to skip ReMIND and Melody of Memory.

I am here today mainly to replay DDD on not a 3DS, with playing 0.2 as a hopefully happy side effect. Now that KH3 is out, I can stop pretending to like bad Kingdom Hearts games and truly critique this one as a game. Or maybe I'm already half Xehanort myself.
(Dream Drop Distance was nine years ago?! what the FUCK)

Kingdom Hearts: Dream Drop Distance
The main thing to know about DDD before going in is that you swap between Sora and Riku. Not at will, and not at predetermined points. You will swap whenever the fuck the game feels like it, or so I hear. In my 3DS playthrough, I was able to complete a level as one, then switch to the other. I was never dropped against my will, but I expect that to change.

+ That opening cinematic is perfect (though I can see how it would leave someone in 2012/2017 really REALLY wanting KH3 to hurry up and arrive already)
+ The additions to Traverse Town are great (except Riku's waterway section but whatever)
+ Prankster's Paradise is perfect; both Sora and Riku get dramatically different levels that are both good (Sora's underwater section is a strange choice but a nice one)
+ Whoever designed R&R Seal's ability board is a fucking asshole and needs a promotion
- Riku's version of La Cite des Cloches is simply boring (all the cool exploration parts were given to Sora instead)
- The "walk on these lines on the floor and instantly zip along them" in The Grid is just ANNOYING during combat
- Riku's version of Country of the Musketeers is so small and short compared to Sora's
- The Charnabog fight fucking sucks
- The first part of the Spellican fight doesn't fucking work
- So, to sum up those last two points, Symphony of Sorcery is a 10/10 level with absolutely horrible boss fights; it's the Ratchet and Clank: Going Commando of Kingdom Hearts levels
- The dives with boss fights are awful
- Most of Sora's levels are simply better than Riku's
- Final boss gauntlet has some truly awful shit in there (Ansem II, Young Xehanort)

7.5/10
I will admit that I was in massive not-KH3 fatigue when this game first came out. The command deck still sucks compared to the mainline combat system.

Kingdom Hearts 0.2: Birth by Sleep - A Fragmentary Passage
Who comes up with these names?
KH0.2 follows Aqua after the events of Birth by Sleep and during the events of KH1.

+ The weirdo level design is great
+ Putting Aqua in a regular style of KH game is just perfect (what I'm getting at is I hate the command deck)
+ Starting you at level 50 with your -ga spells was a very good decision
+ Answers the burning question on everyone's mind: why wasn't Mickey wearing a shirt in the ending of KH1?
+ Simple and Clean always gets me
+ I enjoyed these three hours of gameplay more than any command deck game
- I am fucking sick of demon towers (more of a KH3 complaint than an 0.2 complaint really)

worth the price of admission
8.5/10

1. Kingdom Hearts II
2. Kingdom Hearts
3. Kingdom Hearts III
4. 0.2 Birth by Sleep - A Fragmentary Passage
5. Dream Drop Distance
6. Re:Coded
7. Birth by Sleep
8. Chain of Memories
9. 358/2 Days

Pokémon Shield Expansion Pass (2020) - Switch
yeah we all know
$30 is steep as hell but I'm addicted to writing Pokémon game parodies no one will read
also it sounds like it could be fun

i've done two playthroughs of Shield
(first HoF team: Cinderace / Perrserker / Boltund / Falinks / Cursola / Drednaw)
(second HoF team: Pangoro / Alcremie / Centiskorch / Toxicitry / Copperajah / Jellicent)
at the end, I will rate every Gen VIII Pokémon I've used so far into tiers
thanks

playtime before buying the pass is about 22½ hours

Isle of Armour
the first of the two
Galarian Slowbro is definitely going on my team

+ Fun cast of characters
+ Really cool new area to explore; it's like a better wild area
+ New outfit for riding the bike that doesn't look like "mommy says i have to wear a helmet" (I'd still rather not have a "biking uniform" at all)
+ I actually like the Diglett quest (though I didn't do much scouring for them and just interacted with the ones I found naturally)
+ The expansion is level scaled a bit so you can play it right away or as a postgame quest and it won't be too jarring (so you can use the IoA Pokémon in a regular playthrough if you really missed Abra and Shinx)
+ Galarian Slowbro is cool as hell and gets a nice new ability called Quick Draw that's just a quick claw (and if you have a quick claw, they both have a chance to activate)
- It's disappointing only having one new Pokémon form for this expansion (and an event legendary I guess but I missed the event)
- Shield gets fucking Avery instead of Klara
- Grinding Kubfu for the tower is a fucking pain
- I wish there were more trainer battles

I had fun
I don't know, 7/10
it's good

The Crown Tundra
aka catch ALL the legendaries
I only use standard red Pokeballs so this will be fun (it wasn't bad at all honestly; the only catch that gave me actual trouble was Zapdos, which was because the wild area randomly decided to have a sandstorm today)

+ The Calyrex quest is legitimately great
+ Regidrago is cool as hell
+ The scene with the Galarian birds at the tree is neato
+ Galarian Articuno and Moltres are fucking awesome
+ The Galarian Star Tournament is cool
+ AND THEY GAVE BALL GUY A LINE IF YOU TRY TO CHOOSE HIM AS YOUR TAG PARTNER
+ You can wear your regular-ass clothes in the Galarian Star Tournament
- Galarian Zapdos sucks
- Why is Glastrier so FUCKING SLOW (I would have chosen it over Spectrier but WOAH HO HO IT'S A SLOW DEFENSIVE ICE-TYPE!!! EVERYONE KNOWS ICE-TYPES EXCELL AT DEFENSE!!!)
- I'm not sure I like all these "CHOOSE ONE LEGENDARY; THE OTHER IS LOST TO YOU FOREVER (on this save) (unless you trade)" (Regidrago vs Regieleki / Gastrier vs Spectrier / and in IoA your Urshifu form)
- I don't understand what they were going for with Peonia
- Completing the final adventure is down to heavy RNG, as Necrozma is just mixed in with the other legendaries as a possible final battle in Max Adventure
- (LUCKILY, you do not need to catch Necrozma to do the actual final thing, which is the Galarian Star Tournament)

I had fun
I don't know, 7/10
it's good

playtime after finishing both expansions is 36 hours
so hour for hour, if we base it on the main game's playtime, it's actually a good value
I had fun and would recommend this to anyone who enjoyed sword/shield
I would not recommend it to anyone who did not enjoy sword/shield

Gen VIII Pokémon tier list
naturally, I haven't used them all yet
GOD TIER:
Cursola (holy SHIT is it fucking GOOD)
Calyrex - Spectrier (it's the big boy legendary so of course it's good)
Boltund (didn't plan on using it on my final team; Boltund earned its spot)
Toxtricity - Amped

HIGH TIER:
Galarian Slowbro (Quick Draw is a really neat ability)
Cinderace (great early game, bad mid-game, great endgame)
Alcremie (takes a WHILE to get going, and finding the evolution candy you want sucks)
Urshifu - Single Strike (grinding him high enough to beat Mustard is fucking mind-numbing though)
Regidrago (better than the original Regis)
Galarian Moltres (it gets air slash so it's a tier above Articuno)

MID TIER:
Galarian Articuno (it doesn't get air slash and its only special flying move is the highly inaccurate hurricane)
Perrserker
Copperajah
Falinks

LOW TIER:
Drednaw (a physical attacking water-type is not fit for Galar)
Thievul

Far Cry 5 (2018) - Xbone
I picked this up in the Xbox Spring Sale for about $20. I had been considering getting the disc version for a while, which also would have been around $20. However, in this gold edition or whatever, they've bundled in three expansions, an Xbone version of Far Cry 3, and a bunch of dumb trinkets as a bonus. (I'll be honest, I may never get around to playing the FC3 remaster) (a BLOOD DRAGON remaster, however, would have been sick)
Far Cry 5 is set in the midwestern United States, and tasks you, as a new county police officer, with taking down a cult. I was worried when it was announced that it would be ultra-liberal, but the games "journalists" criticised it for being too neutral on the topic. I like when games/movies/whatever let me draw my own conclusions, rather than telling me what to think.

I expect this game to be just like Far Cry 3 and 4, but it's been six years since I played FC4, so I'm cool with that. Even though FC4 was available on Xbone, I didn't have one at the time, and played it on 360 instead. I skipped Primal entirely.

+ Taking outposts in always fun, as in the last two games
+ Prepper stashes are fun little puzzles and/or movement challenges
+ The widowmaker truck is fucking great (but I wish there were more missions to use it in)
+ You can do the three main regions in any order
- The intro takes a bit too long
- Load times are long as hell
- It absolutely fucking sucks when the game says "you've been having fun for long enough now; time for the PLOT"
- If they can just drug you and immediately take you out of the action at any time, why don't they do that exclusively?
- THE BAD GUY IS RIGHT THERE ALONE AND YOU HAVE A GUN; FUCKING SHOOT HIM YOU RETARD
- "I'm going to politely open the door to this church even though I know it's an ambush"
- The boss fight against John is stupid
- It's 2018 and there's a fucking deflategate joke? It's been four years, you can stop being jealous at any time
- Jacob's roid rages are fucking stupid and do I really have to do the same thing four times?
- Faith's bliss trips are also fucking terrible and BORING
- I hate those stupid flowers
- The last mission is an absolute clusterfuck and not in a good way
- What the FUCK is that ending?

To put it bluntly:
Far Cry 5 is a great game when it's letting you run around and be free, but if you have too much fun, it rangles you in and forces you to do some dumb bullshit you don't want to do.
When I played Assassin's Creed Origins, I didn't do any of the story missions after the tutorial, and I highly appreciate the game letting me do that. I very much wish that this game would also let me do that.
But since I hated a big chunk of the game and was forced out of the good parts against my will:
5/10 fuck you

beat it in 30 hours

I HAVE ALSO DECIDED that because of this game, I will finally admit that I am never going back to finish ACOrigins. Here's the review (I've completed pretty much everything that isn't main story anyway)

Assassin's Creed: Origins (2017) - Xbone
I'll get it out of the way early:
WE WUZ KANGZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ
HOL UP
HOL UP
U TELLIN ME
WE WUZ ASSASSINZ N SHIEEEEEEEEEEEEEET

My father bought himself an Xbone X on ebay, and it came with this game. He didn't want the game, so now it's mine. I guess I'm playing another Assassin's Creed game.
Origins is a deep prequel set in ancient Egypt. Unfortunately, you are not able to send your enemies to the shadow realm.
since when is Memphis in Egypt

One thing that needs to be said straight-up is that I spent 45 hours playing before never tackling the second story mission, getting to max level and completing near every sidequest
Also: this game fucking broke the right bumper on my controller (HORRIBLE BUTTON TO MAKE THE ATTACK BUTTON)

+ Combat is better than ever (not hard)
+ I really enjoy the "open-world checklist simulator" format
+ After the prologue, you're just let loose on the world and aren't beholden to the main quest in any way
- The "this game was developed by" line gets longer and longer as the mentally ill think of more things to make themselves "special"
- They STILL have the STUPID FUCKING MODERN-DAY BULLSHIT PLOT (only had to go then once)
- Heavy-handed racism sidequest
- After the Son of Ra cutscene in a sidequest, there was a load time that must have been ten fucking minutes (REALLY wish I'd timed it)
- That sidequest with the little girl in the hay cart features the most annoying little girl since the last one (I left her to rot in the cart forever, never completing the sidequest)
- That same sidequest has you steer a hay cart, which simply doesn't (get caught in the corner, you're stuck forever)
- Pretty sure this game broke the RB button on my controller (it still works, but it's really mushy now) (UPDATE: it has since broken off completely; luckily, I had a spare)

Ubisoft needs to fuck off with the animus bullshit, and I don't care how long it's been part of the series for. It ceased to be interesting in the slightest after AC3.
The modern-day segments are unnecessary and fucking BORING. As the series expands its open world and becomes more and more a legitimate WRPG, the pace-raping modern-day segments stick out more and more as dumb fluff bullshit that should have been removed forever ago, or better yet, never even introduced. I'll admit, the actual missions with Desmond being a legit assassin in AC3 were fun, but ever since, it's been a fucking walking simulator at best. And it's always the same shit; as soon as something happens to either push the story into a halfway interesting direction, or a new city opens up, POOF WE'RE OUTSIDE THE ANIMUS FOR SOME DUMB BULLSHIT

7/10 I enjoyed it despite not playing half of it
ALL HAIL THE OPEN WORLD "WHAT'S A MAIN STORY?" GENRE

GAME CRASHES:
1. Trying to set a marker on my map (14 hours in)
2. See above (44 hours in)

here's some clean-up of some shit i have that i'm not going to get back to

Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3 Expansion Pass (2019/2020) - Switch
It's finally all here, and it's time to buy in.
Between the review in January (2020) and buying the pass, I completed the story mode on all three difficulties, and done the vast majority of the infinity rifts. I'm hoping the expansions will give me the push in level I need to mop up the last few.
The team I finally settled on was Cyclops, Iron Fist, and Elsa Bloodstone. You'll notice that I only listed three characters, because nothing feels great in that fourth slot. Spider-Man, Star-Lord, Scarlet Witch, Psylocke, Ghost Rider, and Thor bounce around in it. Again, hoping the expansions fix that.

CURSE OF THE VAMPIRE:
Listed as "Marvel Knights" pre-release. This adds the gauntlet mode, yet another difficulty for the main story (Nightmare), and four new characters: The Punisher, Blade, Moon Knight, and Morbius the Living Vampire. Morbius is the main villain of the expansion.

+ GREAT character choices on paper
+ The Punisher is fucking awesome in all respects (he has Elsa Bloodstone's best move, Deadpool's best move (WITHOUT the end lag), a sweet-looking dodge + shoot move, and some worthless knife move)
+ Morbius feels fucking great to play
- Moon Knight feels really underwhelming to play as, which is a definite shame, as I was looking forward to him most
- Blade's gimmick doesn't work that well for this kind of game (every move can be charged to four different levels of power, but why bother when Cyclops can just murder a room in that time)
- IF I HAVE TO DO THAT FUCKING AVENGERS TOWER INVISIBLE WALL PUZZLE ONE MORE FUCKING TIME
- How many fucking times are you going to make me fight Elektra
- The gauntlet mode really highlights the game's long load times

RISE OF THE PHOENIX:
Listed as "X-Men" pre-release. This adds the danger room mode, a new gauntlet, and four new characters: Gambit, Cable, Iceman, and Phoenix. Phoenix is the main villain of the expansion.

+ Every new character is fun to play as
+ Gambit and Cable are cool
- Iceman and Phoenix are just shit characters (Marvel fucking assassinated Iceman's character for no reason)
- Beast is fucking ANNOYING
- The art they made of Professor X is kind of creepy

SHADOW OF DOOM:
Listed as "Fantastic Four" pre-release. This adds an epilogue to the story mode, a new gauntlet, and six new characters: Mr. Fantastic, the Invisible Woman, the Human Torch, The Thing, Dr. Doom, and the secret boy. Dr. Doom is the main villain of the expansion.

+ Fun new areas to play around in
+ Sequel/expansion pass 2 hook at the end
+ Character choices are what everyone expected, but still great
+ All four of them are fun to play as
+ Dr. Doom is simple but great
+ Mr. Fantastic's team menu pose is the greatest fucking thing I've ever seen in my life
- What the fuck is up with the Human Torch's voice
- Whoever designed the parts where the Celestial shoots fire and lightning deserves to die horribly of the Chinese Flu

So right now here's where I'm at with my team:
Cyclops is my highest-leveled, so he's always in (especially for any area with walls)
Iron Fist is second, great for the 1v1s
Elsa Bloodstone is ranged support; chose her over Punisher simply because Punisher's other good move is energy-based, which does not mesh well and makes him a mixed attacker, which is horrible in this game
Mr. Fantastic is the crowd-clearer

Then in reserve:
Gambit is character #5 unfortunately; if energy attacks are buffed for a challenge, he gets in
Star-Lord is subbed in for anything requiring synergy
The Thing or Colossus is required if I know we're facing lasers (FUCK LASERS AND ESPECIALLY FUCK THE CELESTIAL)

Persona 3 Portable (2010) - PSP
I'm going to tl;dr this one:
Persona 3's biggest fault is its main dungeon, Tartarus. It's far too long. Whereas Mementos in Persona 5 has 66 floors (81 in Royal), Tartarus has a ridiculous 263. After you meet your "goal" and finally get to the twist, you've completed at most 164 floors. I still have 100 more floors to go, and I simply can't bring myself to do this shit.
Persona 5's hand-crafted dungeons are simply what the series needed. Royal confirmed this.

here's the original review:
The Persona fanbase hates the rest of itself. P1/2, 3, 4, and 5 all seem to have completely separate fanbases who shit-talk the other games constantly.
Now, I don't own a PlayStation Vita to play the "best" version of P4 (it's since been put on Steam), but I do own a PSP (cough) so I can play P3P. I'm definitely willing to give this game a try. Maybe I'll like it better than P5, maybe I'll drop it midway through who knows

Before we get into the rest of the game, let's talk about the main battle theme. ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0RKF6gqCXiM )
For the first in-game month, I hated it every time I started a battle. Then I got used to it and I love it
But man that "ooh yeah duhdundundunduhdundunduh baby baby" bit is just perfect (0:52)

I first started this in 2017, after finishing Persona 5. Then my computer died and I lost my save file. Here in 2020, I'm going to try again.

+ That dorm theme though ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e2Gyaqf7EoU )
+ Elizabeth's dates are great
+ YOU GET A FUCKING DOG AS A PARTY MEMBER (a regular dog not a shitty talking dog)
- Can't fuck your teacher
- All the characters have giraffe necks (ESPECIALLY the girls)
- Summer uniforms are shit (as always)
- That creepy little boy can just fuck right off
- Mitsuru is just the worst ("hey listen i know you scored top 10 in the school on exams but i signed you up for summer school")
- Yukari forces herself into the party for a boss fight that gets her killed immediately because she's weak to the boss's attacks
- The second semester theme is AWFUL ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YQCAv3oKoN8 )
- The post-12th full moon shadow scene is so fucking long JUST LET ME SAVE
- The scene where the new kid joins the class could have been done better; I had no idea Aigis was back in class at that point, so I assumed the seat he was taking was Aigis's, then she was like "i don't like this guy"

the rest of my party for the majority of the game was Akihiko / Koromaru / Aigis

7/10

Genshin Impact (2020) - PS4
china yes
it's free
i saw screenshots and videos and wanted to play it
hope China doesn't use my sensitive PS4 data to undermine the USA
or steal my paypal money

Genshin Impact is an open-world action JRPG. The resemblance to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is striking at first, but it's a very different game overall.
main party: Lumine (heroine) / Noelle / Lisa / Xingqiu
situational backup: Amber / Xiangling
bench-warmers: Fischl / Kaeya / Jean

+ They took the climbing system from BotW (every open world game should follow suit)
+ HOWEVER, they did NOT take the "can't climb in rain lmao" from BotW (every open world game should follow suit)
+ Paimon is the first good dumb cute mascot assistant character
+ The game is legitimately funny at points
+ The elemental interactions are surprisingly interesting and well-thought-out
+ The side quest with the three hilichurl camps (easily missed and fun)
+ Lisa hits me in all the right places
- Progression requires you to gain "adventure rank", which is tedious
- They made all these cool characters with cool movesets, but lock them behind a mobile game-ass RNG roulette system (REAL MONEY FOR MORE ROLLS)
- ey yo we just found this frozen extinct boar whose meat was so good it was hunted to extinction; I'm going to smother it in every garnish and spice known to man so you can't taste the meat itself!!!

it's good but too grindy (call me when they add the next continent)
7/10

Agents of Mayhem (2017) - Xbone
Microsoft randomly gave people $5 of store credit for their Xbox Spring Sale, and I was one of the lucky winners. So I was able to basically get this game for free. The version that was on sale was the super edition or whatever, which includes all the extra paid characters, and lots of cosmetics. Sounds good. (I didn't download Kinzie though because she's the worst)
Agents of Mayhem is made by Volition, the company that made the Saints Row series, and features many characters from and references to the Saints Row series. (it's technically a sequel to Gat Out of Hell, following the "rebuild the earth" ending, which happens to be the one that I got anyway)
This game has been panned since its release, but a lot of people have said that there is definitely fun to be had if you can get it for $10 or less.
The way I understand it, AoM is like Crackdown, and as someone who actually enjoyed Crackdown 3, I'll give it a shot.

+ The optional races are fun
- The scan ability takes too fucking long and you have to do it all the fucking time
- Legion Lairs suck because of the scan ability

My main team was Johnny, Fortune, Oni

GAME CRASHES:
1. During Kingpin's personal mission (5 hours in)
2. During the second boss fight against hammerwhatever (7 hours in)

This game is tedious and tries too hard to be funny, just like everyone says. I'm at a point where every objective says "LEGION LAIR" and I just don't give a fuck.
4/10

Far Cry 5: Hours of Darkness (2018) - Xbone
The first expansion for Far Cry 5, set during the Vietnam war.
In summary: A short little romp through recontexualised Far Cry gameplay. The map is small, but it makes the most of it, with outposts to capture and POWs to rescue. I had fun with this one the whole way through, though the final mission was a little frustrating.
The biggest complaint is that it requires base FC5 to play, unlike Far Cry 3's Blood Dragon. I would have recommended it as a standalone game for the $12 pricepoint, despite only lasting around two hours, according to the time they gave me at the end.

7.5/10
I have no desire to play the other expansions anytime soon though (the concepts don't appeal to me)

Need for Speed Heat (2019) - Xbone
I have been in a racing mood lately. I think the three-year gap since Forza Horizon 4 has gotten to me.
After watching a YouTube-recommended video where the guy rated every Need for Speed game since 2010, I got interested in this one. It sounds like they tried to take Hot Pursuit and make it Forza Horizon.
The last Need for Speed I played was Rivals, which was not great. I want to go in-depth and tune my cars and paint them up, not just hop in and drive to a paint station that randomly chooses my car colour. Half the fun of these games is making your own car. This game brings back everything you loved from Underground/Most Wanted.

+ Driving and racing is simply fun
+ A lot of different races with completely different structures
+ Daytime/nighttime races have completely different purposes and feelings, and both are great
+ The game lets you decide whether it's day or night; you can stay in a perpetual daytime and night will never fall if you'd like
+ Drift events/zones are a nice change of pace
+ You can ignore the story missions and just do races (thank god)
+ Starting car selection is nice (no getting stuck with a hatchback or something stupid)
+ You can rice out anything
+ Any game with a Honda S2000 is good enough for me
- I kind of wanted to go around winning races with a shitty Korean car though (no Kia, no Hyundai)
- The organised racing event part is kind of just shoved in the background
- The soundtrack is fucking terrible; 80% is in Spanish, the other 20% is rap (it has a fucking 80s aesthetic how do you fuck up this bad)
- Story is terrible (it was fine when it was about getting into the street racing league, but the corrupt cop shit just lost me)
- Making the cops more than just a faceless set of enemies was a terrible idea; racing games don't need much more of a story than "win all the races and become the best racer"

GAME CRASHES:
1. Starting a race on the old race track (10 hours in)

Need for Speed Heat is a great game. The story may be terrible, but you're free to simply ignore it after the tutorial and get down to just racing. The progression system isn't perfect, but it's interesting and works well enough.
I'm not 100% done with it, but I'm comfortable giving it a score now and putting out this review. Considering what I wanted from the game, and what the game gives me, I'm giving it a

It felt very fair. The game lets you dominate races without question if your car and driving are good enough. When my car was a good bit above the recommended statline, no one came close to me unless I missed a turn or ran into traffic or something. Whenever I got passed, it felt like it was because I was in a worse car than recommended for that race, or I made a mistake.

Hades (2020) - Switch
Hades is one of those "roguelike" games. (though some people seem to be very pedantic about that term) I've never played one, but everyone says this game is amazing, even if you're not a big fan of the genre. The combat looks fun, and the plot seems interesting, so I bought it after a bit of hesitation. I'm not very good at letting money go, despite what it may seem. I really have to work up to it in a lot of instances.
I bought this on sale on the Nintendo eshop for $17.50 (half the price of the physical version). I'm really fucking glad I did.

+ Great sense of progression; balance of things you keep when you die, and things you lose
+ Great set of weapons to use to keep things interesting
+ Fun combat that's different each time due to the blessing system
+ Worthwhile incentives to use every weapon rather than just the same one over and over
+ Fun cast of characters with great voice acting and loads of dialogue, for something to look forward to after you die
+ Dusa is cute! CUTE!
+ That feeling of accomplishment after beating a boss for the first time though (and, honestly, you never really know which run will be your first victory against the boss until it's about to happen)
+ The furies switch-up legitimately caught me off-guard and is a brilliant way to prevent the first boss fight from getting stale (considering you have to do it every time)
- Some of the mid-bosses are just annoying
- Some of the weapons feel like they need hammer upgrades to be worth anything
- I strongly dislike the spear
- They made Achilles gay

FIRST CLEAR:
attempt #42, twin fists weapon
was not expecting it
(first time I saw the second phase of the final fight too)

I don't think I'm going to become a "roguelike guy" but man did I enjoy this one. I've cleared it once, and am comfortable giving it a rating.

9/10

weapon rankings:
1. fists
2. shield
3. gun
4. sword
5. bow
6. spear

question of the day: how many people, upon beating meg for the first time, said aloud "it's been a real slice"

Forza Horizon (2012) - Xbox 360
Everyone says that Horizon 1 is the best one. I need to play it so I can once again be the contrarian here. The big reason it took this long to get to it is that, as someone who started with Horizon 2, I assumed the shitty-ass road trips from Horizon 2 were also in this one, and Horizon 3 was the one to finally remove them. This is not the case. Road trips are exclusive to Horizon 2, meaning that game will forever be the worst in the series until they get the bright idea to bring them back.
Forza Horizon 1 takes place in Colorado. It may not sound as exciting as the foreign countries of later installments, but I've been to Colorado the same number of times I've been to Australia or Italy: zero. The Rocky Mountains are just as new to me as Horizon 5's upcoming trip to Mexico.
Due to the retarded way they license their cars/music/whatever, all the expansions have been delisted, meaning I only get to experience what's on the disc. It's playable on the Xbone, though, which is nice.

+ That intro where there are ten spots left in the festival and you have to drive like a bat out of hell to get there in time is brilliant
+ Best rock station in the series by far (hate The Subways though)
+ The festival lady is CUTE
+ Having AI racers instead of drivatars lets them actually flesh out the people you're racing, and they have rival racers that actually taunt you pre-race and on the radio
+ The final boss feels like a legitimate antagonist and marks the championship with a feeling of accomplishment the other Horizon games don't even try to have
+ Event start locations aren't just markers floating in space; they're actual booths beside the road
+ Showcases after the first are optional (meaning you can do them at your own pace, rather than when the game tells you to do them, as was the case in Horizon 2 and 3)
+ Actually makes you use more different kinds of cars to do the various races
- The intro cutscene to street racing is really misleading (leads you to believe you're betting your car on the race, when you're doing nothing of the sort)
- The paint shop and the garage are different buildings, which is inconvenient (and all the load times when working on/buying cars are really inconvenient)
- Smaller car selection but come on it's a 360 game
- That race with the park bridges can fuck right off
- Whoever designed the ending to the final race is pure evil

Forza Horizon 1 gets the little things right in a way the series would never recapture. To the point: I am glad I started with Horizon 2, because it's clearly the worst one. If I'd started with Horizon 1, I would have been very disappointed when I moved on to 2.
Drivatars were a mistake, and their inclusion in Horizon 2 depleted the game's personality. Horizon 4 tried to recapture that personality by having twenty different NPCs who talk at you after you do anything, but it's not even in the same league.
Horizon 1 feels like a game you're taking part in, whereas Horizon 3 and 4 feel like games that revolve around you. In Horizon 1, you're the black sheep underdog who barely made it into the festival; in Horizon 4, you're the staff's favourite. The exception is the showcases, I suppose, which come faster in-game than what the festival lady tells you would indicate, but that's clearly a gameplay concession.

10/10
they perfected the concept on their first try

base game only being rated:
overall: Horizon 1 > 3 > 4 >>> 2
map: Colorado (1) > Australia (3) > Italy/France (2) > U.K. (4)

i'll rate the rally expansion as soon as i acquire a time machine

Luigi's Mansion 3 (2019) - Switch
Ditching the haunted mansion for a haunted hotel, Luigi's Mansion 3 looks varied and interesting in a way that its predecessors were not. I've never been one for the gloomy mansion aesthetic, but that hotel looks cool as hell. The trailers and gameplay footage I've seen show a game brimming with personality on every corner.
I was a bit on the fence about this one, honestly, but $20 off on Prime Day swayed me.

+ The game is absolutely oozing with personality
+ Plenty of tools to make exploration and puzzle-solving interesting
+ Discovering a hidden door or gem is always nice
+ Floors 2 and 3 are very good
+ Floor 6 is stupid but in a good way, and has some good puzzles
+ Having the power saw in my hands was the greatest feeling
+ Floor 8 is cool as hell
+ Floor 11 is absolutely great, especially if you really think about the gimmick near the end
- You can't invert your aim controls
- The rat thing on floor 2 went on for too long
- The floor 7 boss is fucking terrible
- The ridiculous padding between floors 8 and 9 can FUCK OFF
- The B2F boss fight is the absolute WORST
- I really hope whoever designed that bullshit was fired and executed for his crimes against humanity

I stopped at floor 13 because I was beginning to find the game incredibly annoying. Every room, it seemed I was saying "really?". Combat is a chore in the later floors, and apparently the stupid fucking cat appears immediately after where I am. I'm not going to sit there and treat a game I'm no longer enjoying as something I "NEED" to finish. It's not like I'm getting paid for this.
Luigi's Mansion 3's beginning is really great. Everything up through floor six was great. Later floors like 8 and 11 are really cool, but the latter half of the game has far too many shit floors to make it worth it.

6.5/10
I wish I could give it a higher score, but that's just how it is sometimes. I'm glad I played it.

The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles (2021) - Switch
FINALLY
I NEVER THOUGHT THIS DAY WOULD COME
In 2015 in Japan only, Capcom released a new Ace Attorney game written and directed by series creator Shu Takumi called Dai Gyakuten Saiban, or "The Great Ace Attorney". At the time, I was 100% out with then-main series director Takeshi Yamazaki, and was not looking forward to Spirit of Justice (which ended up being excellent but that's another story).
DGS never came to America on 3DS. Thus came an effort to make a fan translation of DGS and its sequel. As of right now, the first game's fan translation is done, and the second game's is halfway done. I would have played the first game's translation right away, but everyone says that the games tell one complete story, and I didn't want to wait years for a translation that may never be completed while having half a story rotting away in my brain.
I was waiting for the second game's fan translation when Capcom dropped a bombshell in April of 2021. For the 20th anniversary of the series, a miracle happen. The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles was announced not just for Japan, but for the west as well. It collects both DGS games remastered on Switch for just $40. I was willing to pay $60. I was willing to pay $80. I was willing to pay $100.

The Great Ace Attorney is a far-flung prequel to Phoenix Wright's adventures, starring his Japanese ancestor, Ryunosuke Naruhodo. The reason this game didn't come sooner is that Ryunosuke's nationality plays a big part in the game, when he goes to London. In 2005, when Ace Attorney first came to the west, Capcom made Phoenix American. This created more and more issues as the series went on, finally coming to a head here. Capcom finally did the sensible thing and just said "Phoenix Wright has Japanese ancestry (Winston Payne too)".

general
+ The game lets you start from whichever game/whichever case you wish (if you've already played the fan translation)
+ Sherlock Holmes is a fucking ridiculous character, and the dance of deduction is a great new mechanic
+ I thought I would hate Iris, but she's actually a good character
+ Van Zieks is an absolutely great prosecutor
- The jury can wear on you at times
- The jury gets worse as the games go on I swear to fucking Christ
- I strongly dislike Susato
- The fact that the game uses British English means I have to put up with dumb bullshit like "defence" and "whilst" (I am aware of what you are thinking; my version of English is an incomprehensible, inconsistent mishmash thank you very much)
- The lack of the word "the" before "hospital" is driving me FUCKING CRAZY
- British was fun when it was just throwing the letter U into random words, but it's gone too far and I'd like to get off this retardo ride (I had no idea "good job that ____" was a real thing they say over there; I thought it was Purple being Purple)
- The British judge annoys me with his "ORDAR" rather than "order" (I'm going to assume he's retarded and not all of Britain)

The Great Ace Attorney Adventures (2015)
G1-1: The Great Departure
in which Ryunosuke ruins everything by saying hello

+ Ryunosuke's nervous energy in this case is absolutely great (I love the way his eyes dart around the courtroom)
+ I greatly appreciate a new Payne ancestor
+ An actually decently complex tutorial case with multiple witnesses and not just "defendant and culprit" (first time since AA4, second time overall)
+ The conversations about who ate the steak though
+ Jezail is a treasure
- The tutorials go on for too long
- Too much "I can't do it oh no" when if you'll just let me in on this I've got it all wrapped up
- Honestly just carried by Jezail; everything else about it is kind of boring

G1-2: The Unbreakable Speckled Band
in which I can't believe they just fucking Mia Feyed that guy

+ All the wrong answers in the dance of deduction though (ESPECIALLY the first one)
- Your first real impression of Susato is terrible ("oh you and I disagree on something? I'm going to strike you the fuck down bitch boy")
- I liked the crime better when it was a hilarious accident
- All the characters specific to this case are bad
- Complete lack of variety in investigation areas (two near-identical rooms and a hallway)
- Completely carried by the dance of deduction

G1-3: The Runaway Room
in which you defend a charismatic leprechaun

+ tl;dr it's perfect
+ The characters of the case are insanely likable, especially the defendant
+ I got duped, bamboozled, and smeckledorfed all over the place
+ Like, my thoughts weren't "that wasn't there before"; I was thinking "how did I miss that" (which led to the aforementioned hoodwinking)
+ The uneasy ending is absolutely perfect
+ I have nothing bad to say about this case

G1-4: The Clouded Kokoro
in which we participate in the most retarded case in the series
4-3 is considered the worst case in the series because the prosecution's argument for how the crime went down is completely retarded. G1-4 ups the ante with a case that is the exact opposite. The prosecution's claims are completely plausible, but the truth is 100% completely and totally retarded.

+ I love Soseki's animations
+ I love Roly and Pat's animations
+ Legitimately funny wrong answers to the dance of deduction
- This entire case is fucking retarded
- In addition, once you get past the dance of deduction, it's entirely and undeniably obvious what happened
- I hate Mrs. Garrideb with a passion
- Unlike most stock "bad cases", this one has the gall to have some great characters attached to it (Soseki and Pat mostly)
- Too much "I can't do it oh no" when I've had this case figured out for the last five hours
- It makes a big deal about why the victim was holding the book and "oh no I can't figure it out" when IT'S FUCKING OBVIOUS THAT SHE BENT OVER TO PICK IT UP
- It wastes a perfectly good twist (the moved crime scene) on such a shit case

G1-5: The Unspeakable Story
in which we attempt to forget all about case 4

+ Depressed Sherlock is great
+ The dancing dandy is delightful
+ The Skulkin brothers are perfect
+ The way this case interacts with case 3 is extremely well-done
+ I like the final case being in such a quaint location and having a victim who is just tangential to the actual conspiracy part of the case

OVERALL
first case is mediocre, but carried by Jezail
second case is kind of bad, but carried by Sherlock Holmes and his terrible deductions
third case is BRILLIANT
fourth case is retarded, but saved from the lowest gutter by Pat and Roly
fifth case is great, and honestly the best final case since the original trilogy

8/10
(similarly to Justice for All, the good is SO GOOD that I just can't rate it any lower)

The Great Ace Attorney 2: Resolve (2017)
G2-1: The Blossoming Attorney
in which they attempt justify a tutorial in an irreverent manner

+ Soseki's still great
- Kind of bland
- No real standout villain like the last tutorial
- I still hate Susato and now I hate her friend (throwing the true culprit at the end was dumb)
- Basically, I hate every single time someone is thrown; it doesn't matter if it's Susato, her friend, or even the judge
- Killing off Jezail in a tutorial case is just silly

G2-2: Memoirs of the Clouded Kokoro
in which we debate the merits of eating soap

+ Every conversation about the soap
+ The gas meters thing was well-paced and well-placed
- Shame about everything else
- It's like the other game's second case; the dance of deduction being brilliant doesn't save the fact that the rest of the case is bland
- The only good characters are the returning regulars (Naruhodo, Sherlock, Soseki, van Zieks, and the cameo by Iris)
- My God is that victim annoying
- Olive is kind of annoying too (as a fledgling artist as a fledgling artist as a fledgling artist)
- "I'm no longer allowed to practice law in Great Britain" "wait what" "ANYWAY ONTO THE FLASHBACK" (CHEAP NARRATIVE TRICKERY)

G2-3: The Return of the Great Departed Soul
in which science goes horribly awry
alternatively:

+ I hope whomever did the professor's voice in the opening scene got a raise for it
+ All the conversations when investigating van Zieks's office
+ I did not expect that character turn from Gina (but I appreciate it)
+ Goddamn is smiling Gina cute
+ Madame Tusspells
+ The fucking defendant breaking apart Naruhodo's argument so triumphantly
+ That dance of deduction in the workshop
- Susato reappears just in time to throw Naruhodo at a pivotal moment (if I were any angrier of a man, I would have hucked my controller through the screen; it's like she appeared specifically because I was enjoying the case too much)
- The first summation examination is just bullshit; I have evidence to back up my claim, but Naruhodo doesn't speak the fuck up about it so now I have to keep quiet and sit on my thumbs and twiddle my ass waiting for them to stop being retarded
- Fucking hate the girl with the corn
- I strongly dislike Drebber and his animations (why is he a robot? it's the fucking 19th century why is he a robot?)
- The masked apprentice's identity reveal is just stupid (and expected)
- The first half of the case is simply far better than the second (anti-gravity machine nonwithstanding)
- Fucking spare me the "you need to get to the truth of what happened ten years ago to understand the case!" bullshit
- The scalpels thing felt random and tacked on to make their "amazing twist" work

it was at this point that I really started to feel checked out on the game, and believed I would hate the last two cases

G2-4: Twisted Karma and His Last Bow
in which Sherlock Holmes drinks too much Hawaiian Punch

+ Venus is CUTE
- Boone's design makes me want to fucking vomit
- WHY WOULDN'T IT LET ME EXAMINE THE FIREWORKS WHEN I FIRST GOT THEM? AND THEN IT REQUIRES ME TO EXAMINE THEM LATER WHEN I'VE ALREADY WRITTEN IT OFF AS "I COULDN'T EXAMINE THIS"
- Shut the fuck up about the professor I don't give a single fucking shit just write a goddamn case that doesn't revolve around some dumb bullshit that happened ten years ago that we've already fucking been over
- Ends arbitrarily early in order to make this game five cases instead of four
- Wastes its central premise on the professor bullshit

G2-5: The Resolve of Ryunosuke Naruhodo
in which i can finally stop playing this shit game

- The very VERY VERY FIRST THING THAT HAPPENS IN THIS CASE IS FUCKING SUSATO THROWING NARUHODO
- FUCK THIS FUCKING GAME

I'm out, I'm done. Fuck it. I hated this game, and I'm not going to force myself to finish it. I forced myself through case 4, and I am just not going to continue. This game was BAD. The story is awful and boring as hell, and I can't fucking STAND Susato for another minute.
I've gone on and on about Investigations 2 being terrible, but I don't think I ever considered abandoning it as hard as I did this one.

OVERALL:
first case is kind of boring, and no standout character is around to save it
second case has an insufferable focal character, but Sherlock's first deduction saves it just slightly
third case starts off strong, but it goes off on a stupid tangent about something that happened ten years ago and I was just kind of over this case before it ended
fourth case bores me to death by continuing to circle around the stupid fucking events of ten years ago
fifth case I didn't even fucking bother with

2/10 fuck you

Forza Motorsport 7 (2017) - Xbone
I have taken the $1 for one month of Game Pass deal again. Forza Motorsport 7 is going to be delisted next month, and it is currently on sale for $10. I have no idea if I will like it, but I am on a huge racing game kick, and am going to give it a try.
I'm glad I didn't buy it. This is certainly not my sort of thing.

I was going to just throw out this review, but I decided that before I just wrote the game off completely, I wanted to do a single race at Daytona.
This is when I learned that the menus in this game are FUCKING GARBAGE.
Every single track is unlocked from the start, but they are all hidden behind a maze of godawful menu design. The option to choose which track you are going to race on in free play is cleverly hidden so that you have to pick every menu option blindly, not knowing what anything does. I fucking hate this game, and it is all because of the menus. Previously, I wrote it off as "not for me". Now, I'm going to call it a shit game.
1/10

Also, what the fuck is up with the career intro? It's the most pretentious drivel I've seen in years. This is a racing game and this stupid lady won't stop fucking yakking at me about some real-ass drivers I don't give a FUCK about. You're instantly railroaded into boring unskippable cutscenes narrated by a monotone whore, and then you're forced into three single-lap races where nothing fucking matters.
Whoever thought this was a good idea is probably the menu designer as well. Fucking shoot that man in the head.

edit: my kneejerk reaction phase is over; real review forthcoming

Forza Motorsport 7 (2017) - Xbone
Now that I've gotten that out of my system, onto a real review.
My problem before is that I chose Lamborghinis first, because you get a free car, and I wanted the expensive one to be free. It made sense, but I hated the Lamborghini championship.

+ Non-F1 circuits are actually fun
+ Some cool NASCAR tracks are present (Daytona, Watkins Glen)
+ There are enough championships in each tier that you can just skip anything you don't want to do
- Menu design is fucking terrible and finding anything takes fucking forever (I hate modern UI design in general, but this game's is the absolute worst)
- Sometimes when you resume from sleep mode, none of the buttons work
- The intro is fucking awful and takes forever with unskippable cutscenes
- F1 circuits can kiss my ass
- There are only four NASCAR drivers' cars present, and I hate three of them (Kyle Busch, Brad Keselowski, Joey Logano) (and Chase Elliott in the 24 is just weird even though I remember it happening)
+ BUT GOD BLESS THE AUTISTIC SHAPE-MOVERS WHO MAKE REPLICA NASCAR LIVERIES (I can drive my boy Kyle Larson's car, the 5)
- The trees on maple valley raceway look like absolute shit

In the end, this game wasn't really my thing. I played through the first three of six championship tiers, and I'm just good. I've experienced enough of this game to say that it's fine, but not for me.

Psychonauts 2 (2021) - Xbone
God bless that $1 Game Pass deal
Psychonauts 1 came out in 2005. It was brilliant, full of personality, charm, and unique level ideas. Then Tim Schaefer made Brutal Legend, which was awful. Then came Stacking, which was cute enough. Then came a Twitter meltdown and a series of failed crowdfunding projects that resulted in Schaefer being banned for life from every single crowdfunding platform in existence. Finally, Schaefer's company was bought out by Microsoft, and Psychonauts 2 was finished and released to the world day one on Game Pass. The game was actually going to be released two years ago with a shitload of unfinished content left on the cutting room floor, but Microsoft gave them the extra two years to actually finish the game. And they didn't even cancel it like Scalebound.
Despite numerous red flags, the pre-release content for this game looks great. The new levels we can see look beautiful, the new powers and gameplay elements look fun, and the voice cast even came back. Maybe good things can happen, every once in a while.

+ Feels like it's straight out of 2005 in the best ways (it's a 3D platformer with collection elements and legtimately funny dialogue that can be completely missed if you don't explore)
+ Feels like it's straight out of 2021 in the best ways (it's bigger, longer, looks great, and has SIDE QUESTS)
+ Actually good plot twists
+ They got the original voice cast back
+ Sam is a treasure
+ Taking a sane mind, turning it insane, then trying to change it back is great (and the insane version of the world is GREAT)
+ You buy PSI cores and assemble challenge markers in the same place now (and there are multiple places to do it in to boot)
+ The hub world is great (and sized perfectly too)
- Raz's new outfit kind of sucks
- There's no way to complete the first mental connection objective and still have Hollis associate socks and sandals with delight
- Gay couple (thankfully, there's only one and there's no kiss scene thank fucking god)
- Bob's Bottles is a terrible, ploddingly slow level and the moth is annoying
- The boss fight in Bob's Bottles is absolute garbage

GAME CRASHES:
1. During the first boss fight (4 hours in)
2. Exploring the Questionable Area (8 hours in)
3. While paused and I was out of the room (15 hours in)
4. After clearing Bob's Bottles (21 hours in) [forced a hard shutdown, which is a new one on me]

I can't believe they fucking did it. Psychonauts 2 is just as good as the original.
9/10

Just Cause 4 (2018) - Xbone
An addendum
With my latest Game Pass $1 subscription, I decided to give Just Cause 4 another try. I ended up buying the game, as my subscription was close to running out.
I feel like a lot of my complaints in the first review are weird and I am going to attach that review at the end of this, even if I don't agree with my past self in a lot of areas. Let's dig in to it

+ The final mission of each operation is always pretty cool
+ The "drive bomb cars into the water" mission was cool (when you're not a fucking retard like past me apparently)
+ You can just have whatever you want supply dropped in
+ MEANING that my complaints about the game world being too big are fucking garbage because you can just have a helicopter dropped in I mean come on dude
+ I have grown to like the limited ammo/scrounging weapons thing
+ It's fucking fun as hell to play around with the grapple, balloons, and rocket boosters
+ Driving is kind of shit but in a fun way
- Operation Sandstinger is one of the worst missions in the history of videogames
- You can't see shit in the sandstorm, it hurts your eyes, and they have you hunting for these cooling systems without giving you a map marker for where to go
- They say to "follow the lights" BUT YOU CAN'T FUCKING SEE THE LIGHTS
- Then the fucking doors on the cooling systems are bugged and don't function properly, so you think you must be a retard because nothing works, and you have to come up with a retarded solution to the problem
- Swimming is fucking terrible (and they never tell you how to dive/rise; I had to fucking Google it)
- Too many "defend the thing" missions where SOMEONE is shooting rockets from SOMEWHERE but I can never fucking see where
- Achievements are bugged if you keep the game running while the Xbone is in sleep mode (THANKFULLY, the game gave me that one story achievement later on)
- The side mission chains take way too much grinding to progress

This is a good game overall, but not even close to a great one. It's a fun time waster, except for Operation Sandnigger, which is so ridiculously awful that it has to be played to be believed.
6.5/10

Here are incomplete reviews of two games I'm probably not going back to play anytime soon. If I'm wrong, and have anything meaningful to say, I'll post an addendum.

Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age (2018) - PS4
The latest installment of the long-running JRPG series, and the first one I'm going to play. The graphics and artstyle drew me in, and that one review that compared it to Final Fantasy X kind of kept me there.
I started this one later than the other games I got around the same time because I didn't want to be running through two JRPGs at the same time. Octopath Traveller can kiss my fucking ass, though, so it's time to start this shit.
I'm dividing this game into sections for easier reading

GENERAL:
+ Sick graphics and artstyle bro
+ Love interest's dub voice isn't annoying, against all odds (take a look at me now)
+ Your first party member is Italian-American for some reason???
+ Jade
+ The forge mechanic/minigame is neato
+ Every living party member gets experience from battles, meaning that the ones you find less useful don't stay that way, and can learn new spells and abilities (hoping Rab gets a good multi-hit spell)
+ Every town has a different country theme (complete with accent)
+
The town of Hotto
Every citizen must speak
Only in haiku
- There's no way to pause the fucking game (you "won't get into battles" in the menu but seeing the monsters/NPCs move around still doesn't fill me with confidence)
- If I get an attack in on an enemy in the overworld, why the FUCK is it able to ambush me
- Getting the crossbow makes everything worse with just about zero benefit
- The town theme is annoying (and the Hotto theme as well)
- Veronica is the fucking worst ("oh i'm a grown woman who was magically turned into a child and also i'm an unbearable fucking bitch")
- Sick of Sylvando's shit
- The casino fucking sucks (San Andreas-ass video poker and shitty slot machines)

ACT I:
- Fuck Gondolia ("oh you are-a on the important a-mission re:fate of the world-a??? mama mia i cannot let-a you leave-a until we have the-a beauty pageant!!!")
- Sniflheim is nicely topped off by some Disney-ass bullshit
- The orb in Zwaardsrust is just right behind the locked door; after all the "oh wow what's behind the door" and anticipation for a dungeon, the orb is right fucking there; no challenge, nothing

ACT II:
+ Avarith is just a funny character
- FUCK the king of Heliodor (ordering me around like nothing fucking happened)
- FUCK PANG
- FUCK THESE NEVER-ENDING DIALOGUE LOOPS; WHY EVEN FUCKING GIVE ME THE OPTION TO SAY "NO" TO WHATEVER RIDICULOUS BULLSHIT YOU'VE COME UP WITH
- WHY IS THE HERO NOT ALLOWED TO HAVE A SPINE
- Legit stopped playing for five months here

party members can be summed up as:
1. silent protagonist
2. blue-haired Italian-American thief (never says any of the common Italian phrases)
3. grown woman who was magically turned into a child; also an unbearable fucking bitch who puts everyone down at every opportunity she gets
4. this space intentionally left blank
5. camp circus man (merely pretending???)
6. best girl
7. old man whose spell selection leaves a lot to be desired
8. surprise it's the knight who was chasing you all game

my main party once i got everyone was Jade (6) [spears] / MC - Samuel (1) [greatswords] / Erik (2) [daggers] / Veronica (3) [big staffs]
don't need defense if you kill everything right away

I hope that when the Switch version inevitably adds new party members, we get Krystalinda and Blue John.

Now, I am going to rate the subplot of every town/city in the game. A 7/10 basically means it's fine, because that's the base score of "just the game without any flourishes".
Spoiler:

Total time played:
After Act I: 31.5 hours
After Act II:
After Act III:

Octopath Traveller: great characters/story; gameplay balance pisses me the fuck off
Dragon Quest XI: great gameplay balance; characters/story piss me the fuck off
I can't win.

would have been a 7/10 if it ended after act 1
act 2 does not interest me at all and i haven't played it in years at this point so 6/10 whatever

Dragon Quest Builders (2018) - Switch
This game came out in 2016 on PS4
Minecraft is the biggest game of the last decade. It's impressive how something that looks so terrible could entertain millions and millions to this day. The graphics of Minecraft were originally just placeholders for the alpha build, but everyone liked them so much that Notch just left them. It's hard to argue with the results, because they've become iconic in the decade since it came out.
Regardless, several years later, Enix made this game. It's blocky-ass Minecraft with an RPG-ass story, but it actually looks GOOD. I played the demo a full year ago, in December of 2018. I curled up in bed with my Switch and had a great time. Unfortunately, the Switch version is $45 on the low end, which is three times as much as the PS4 version. Let's not talk about how my cheap ass got this game.

+ There's a definite sense of progression throughout each chapter
+ Building a land bridge to skip small chunks of the levels is very satisfying
+ Building the towns is just great
- I just wish there was more room to build it in
- It can be a bit hard to aim where you're trying to place blocks at times (strafing is annoying because it doesn't let you place blocks at ground level; only above and below)
- I made a room you fucker just let me sleep
- I wish ally and enemy health bars were different colours
- Pippa can just fuck off (I thought it was hilarious that I was able to complete her quest to give her her own house in town, then immediately change the ownership to myself with no penalty)
- I don't really like the "monsters attacking the town" shit
- I FUCKING LOVE HOW MONSTERS CAN RANDOMLY SPAWN AND DESTROY PARTS OF YOUR TOWN
- Also, I wish that attacking enemies over your floor spikes didn't destroy the spikes

7/10
act 1 is great
act 2 sucks
tbd (honestly never) on acts 3-5

Forza Horizon 5 (2021) - Xbone
Participate in races all over Mexico while zoomers talk at you incessantly for hours on end!
I played the shit out of every Horizon game over the summer, completing all the championships in Horizons 2 and 3. I have a very good context for how each entry in the series stacks up against the others, and we will see at the end where Horizon 5 ends up.

+ The racing is still 10/10
+ They FINALLY added the DeLorean
+ The opening tutorial section before the game opens up is way, way, way less bad than Horizon 4
+ Expeditions are neat; I ended up doing them because I wanted to do them, rather than just because they unlock new events
+ When you unlock a showcase or whatever, the game just lets you continue on your merry way and continue doing whatever you want
- Ugliest cover car the series has ever had
- I want to EARN being the center of attention dammit not be "HERE'S THE SUPERSTAR!!!" from the first nanosecond I appear; they keep calling me "superstar" and I am literally CRINGING
- They have all these gay nicknames and they won't let me be "gringo"
- "You can be anyone you want to be (as long as you want to be ugly)"
- The monster truck showcase is fucking awful
- We didn't need more than one 20-minute long finale race; we CERTAINLY didn't need SIX
- Trailblazing sucks and the finale for PR stunts is fucking trailblazing
- When you map filter down to new events you haven't done yet, events that are part of the current Forzathon don't appear (the Forzathon fucking sucks anyway)

GAME CRASHES:
1. Found a barn (15 hours in)

9.5/10
it's more forza horizon
all of this game's flaws are irrelevant, because you can just hyper-focus on racing or PR stunts or whatever after an hour of tutorials
i, for one, am a huge fan of "the same game i liked before on a different map"
(i've got 32 hours in to win every race, discover every road, find all the barn finds; basically do everything except trailblazers and horizon stories)

A note: if you took the best of Horizon 4 and 5's rock stations, they will would not be anywhere near as good as the rock stations from 1, 2, and 3. 3's pop station is immaculate, as well.
5's pop station is the best part of the soundtrack, overall. The top pop tracks are, of course, The Valley of the Pagans, Levitating, and New Heartbreak. But if I have to listen to Hello, Hello, Hello ONE MORE FUCKING TIME I'M GOING TO KILL SOMEONE
The top rock tracks are, of course, Trouble's Coming and Caution, but, unfortunately, I had heard both songs before playing the game.

SERIES RANKING:
1. Forza Horizon 1
2. Forza Horizon 3
3. Forza Horizon 5
4. Forza Horizon 2
5. Forza Horizon 4

5 may rise up a bit, but I'm not kneejerk putting it above 1 and 3
tier list including expansions

Pokémon BrilliantDiamond (2021) - Switch
"Florida man enslaves God; uses Him to attack preschoolers' pets"
The long-awaited remake of Pokémon Diamond and Pearl. People predictably complained that it was a remake of Diamond and Pearl instead of Platinum.
I, however, being the alpha contrarian, massively prefer D/P to Platinum. The most criminal thing I've noticed since the release of this remake is the complete lack of fanart of the new best Gen IV girl, blonde Dawn. (or "blondawn" if you prefer)

+ This game is cute as hell
+ I really like the little detail of Dawn wearing different boots before you get the running shoes
+ They no longer show the little animation of your Pokémon every single time you smash a rock
+ The Grand Underground is way better than the original underground, and lets you catch some Pokémon you can't otherwise even before completing the game
+ Ball capsules are back and better than before
- Can't skip the catching tutorial (Sword and Shield's biggest improvement)
- Gardenia's gym sucks (I thought that girl was a rock)
- D/P's location for Defog was awful
- Fantina's gym sucks
- Happiness and Affection being merged was fucking dumb as shit
- Budew took so fucking long to evolve into Roselia that it bypassed all of Roselia's good moves and I had to hunt down heart scales

TO PUT IT PLAINLY:
This is a remake of Diamond. As someone who prefers Diamond to Platinum for various reasons, I was overall satisfied. All I was missing from Platinum overall were the expanded Pokédex and some of the improved gym layouts.
Even with the Sword and Shield-style EXP system, I still had trouble against Flint and Cynthia. Take that how you will.
This is also the cutest mainline Pokémon game by far if you're into that.
7/10 remake of a 7/10 game

final team: Infernape / Roserade / Luxray / Floatzel / Mr. Mime / Drapion

Kirby: Star Allies (2018) - Switch
This year, Kirby and the Forgotten Land will come out, and it looks fucking great. I've been waiting for Star Allies to not be $60 for years, and now is the time.
I'm going to keep this brief, because it's a Kirby game, and we all know what that means.

+ It's a Kirby game
+ The new spider copy ability is sweet
+ Rick is my boy
- It's incredibly short (insultingly so for $60)
- The final boss is fucking trash

7/10
it's not the best Kirby game, but it's still good
I'd definitely recommend Planet Robobot for 3DS over this one

Lost Judgement (2021) - PS4
After Like a Dragon came out with its subpar turn-based combat, I am very happy to be back to beat 'em up combat. I hope that Sega can work out their problems with Johnny's so that we can get Judgement 3.
Judgement 2 features a third combat style for Yagami, which is his best yet. It simply proves that RGG Studio never should have switched away from beat 'em up combat.

+ The new snake style is fun as fuck
+ They got rid of the mortal wounds system from the first Judgement
+ School stories are a fun concept; Yagami becoming the advisor to practically every school club is great
+ The skateboard is rad as hell
+ The skatepark and racing missions are the best Yakuza minigame since uh snack bar
+ The dancing minigame is great; particularly the second song
+ The boxing minigame is fun
+ Those last huge crowd fights in the final chapter though
- Crane style is simply just there because it was in the first game; it still sucks and is weak as hell (it's the crowd control style, but tiger is far better at crowd control with the charged bitch slap move)
- The plot setup is weak as hell; the original started with "yakuza have turned up dead with their eyes gouged out", this one starts with "kids are being bullied ): and a woman got groped on a train ):"
- The teacher is the fucking worst ("she's being bullied so OBVIOUSLY SHE'S A BASKET CASE WHO WILL NECK HERSELF AT THE FIRST OPPORTUNITY!!! i am going to ruin everything because i am a retard!!!")
- The plot is so long-winded and keeps going in circles and they keep recapping the plot every hour on the hour and it's a fucking 50-hour game
- They did the thing where you play as Saori and become a hostess again, but it makes far less sense than in the last game, and it seems to exist just to say "remember that thing you liked from the last game?! here it is again!!!"
- Yagami's constant tirades about Sawa in the latter half of the game get REALLY annoying
- Bad story overall that gets
- The first night you can access the biker gang side missions has the main objective be to go to the Plage bar; the second biker mission automatically takes you to the Plague bar, advancing the plot without your consent (this is entrapment)
- Also, the biker gang side mission sucks as a whole anyway
- Ridiculous arbitrary wait times on some school stories (chapter 8 to finish dance club? are you high?)
- Seriously, why not just make each school story start at a later chapter? Make people wait until chapter 8 to start the boxing gym rather than arbitrarily wait to resolve a plot that's already been started
- You are punished for completing the dance club's third act (in chapter 3) during a chapter 6 side mission because "NISHIZONO ISN'T HERE SO I CAN'T REMOVE THIS SPY CAMERA!!!", blocking off the rest of the chain until chapter 8 arbitrarily
- Having an overarching story tying together the minigames is a neat idea, but having to complete every minigame to resolve the plot of all the minigames is ridiculous when two of the minigames are fucking awful (and long as hell)
- The robotics club minigame is so fucking torturous that I won't even bother to complete the school stories plotline, so why bother completing the motorcycle club if it's bad too?
- Also, having so much of the side content tied up in school stories gives us less side missions of other types
- There's only one girlfriend in the base game, and it's the girl from the girls bar that I hated (why not Miu or Haruko? those two are SWELL)
- Yagami can walk and run just fine at most stages of drunkeness, but even a drop of alcohol will make him skateboard like he has parkinsons
- The skateboard with the best stats is ugly as hell
- The southern-most street of Ijincho is inaccessible despite being in Yakuza 7; it makes no sense, and can't be for space, because Yakuza 7 had one more whole city than this game, plus more interiors (the school can't take up THAT much space)
- A bunch of interiors were cut from Kamurocho for seemingly no reason (that cafe next to the arcade springs to mind instantly) [I understand the fishing pond and internet cafe since they'd serve no purpose, but a restaurant?]
- The translation of this game has rare moments where it completely shits the bed with dumb twitter speech (I guarantee that at least one word they used at the start of chapter 8 was not what she said in Japanese)

A game of highs and lows; the lows being the victor, due to the bulk of the main plot being trash, and hiding the plot resolution of the minigame stories behind the godawful ones. Who is The Professor? I'll never know.
But those huge crowd fights at the end pull it up just a bit.
6.5/10

YAKUZA GAME RANKS:

3. Yakuza 3
gap
4. Yakuza 5
6. Judgement

Middle-earth: Shadow of War (2017) - Xbone
The sequel to 2014's Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor, which was the game that finally convinced me that we needed the new console generation.
When this came out, I heard the ending was locked behind MICROTRANSACTIONS or retarded amounts of grinding. I got this for $8, so if I can't beat it, oh well.

The original was back-loaded; it took a while to get to the best part of the game. The first half of Shadow of Mordor just wasn't great, aside from Ratbag's missions.
This game isn't quite as back-loaded. The good part doesn't start until the second act, but that's still better than the original. Maybe the third game will let us start off at the good part.

+ THE NEMESIS SYSTEM IS STILL BEAUTIFUL
+ Building your army is SICK
+ Attacking forts is GREAT
- The story missions SUCK
- I don't like any character in this fucking game that isn't an orc (they're all terrible)
- Forest Lady has the most annoying fucking accent
- Stripping you of EXECUTIONS and making you use skill points to buy them is fucking criminal
- Upon your first level-up, the game FORCES you to use the skill point to buy an ability I DIDN'T FUCKING WANT
- FUCK YOU

I am done with this game after taking all four fortresses. There are still many main quests to do, but fuck that. I am 100% confident that I have experienced everything good in this game. Like with Assassin's Creed Origins, I will bow out after fully exploring the map and barely touching the main quest.
6/10
could have been great but they decided to try and tell a bad story instead of just making it a giant sandbox where you build orc armies and take over Mordor

it's better than the original at what the original did well
it's worse than the original at what the original did poorly

Assassin's Creed Odyssey (2018) - PS4
Assassin's Creed Odyssey is the second of the nu-Assassin's Creed games, which started with Origins. Like in Origins, I only plan to do enough of the main plot in order to get complete access to the open world, then I will proceed to ignore the main plot forever. I paid $12 for an open world checklist simulator, not a bad story. My plans were foiled, however, when I actually ended up being interested in the main plot. Whoops.
Odyssey takes place in ancient Greece, and lets you choose whether you want to play as a male or female (Syndicate forced you to switch between both). Ubisoft got really pissy that most people picked the male.
Despite the fact that I've played every other game in the series on Xbox, I got this one for PS4. This is because Origins broke my goddamn Xbone controller; the right bumper snapped clean the fuck off (maybe if the Xbone bumpers weren't the worst buttons fucking ever, it wouldn't have happened) The PS4's controller's R1 button will hopefully stand up to its frequent use as the attack button.

+ Open world side quest simulator
+ You can complete side quests before you even get them, then Alexios will be like "oh was this was you were looking for?"
+ This game did a much better job at making me actually care about the plot at the start than any other game in the series (Alexios's friends are actually characters I was interested in getting to know)
+ Hunting down the cult is great
+ You can simply stumble upon cult members in the wild if you explore the right places, not needing to go through the rigamarole (meaning you don't have to go back to places you've already been to kill rank-and-file cultists; they're already there)
+ Some really cool side quest lines (the head priestess of Aphrodite, the dagger, the minotaur, the "minotaur", Markos's vineyard)
+ Socrates (or Socks to his friends) is a delight
- Hate modern day segments
- "Oh boy Atlantis this is exciting and unexpected I can't wait to-" Then you're back in the lab playing as "who gives a fuck"
- They fucking killed Phoibe off (I saw it coming due to understanding how storytelling works, but I'm still not happy)
- It's disappointing when a reward for a questline is information about a cult member that you've already killed
- Tombs are fucking terrible and they're all the same
- The farting boar is an awful boss fight and the person who designed it should never work in a creative industry again
- The ending is kind of abrupt
- Hate the Isu, hate the woman god

GAME CRASHES:
1. after discovering Atlantis when the game forces you to go to modern day (100 hours in)

Assassin's Creed Odyssey is a great game, legitimately. The combat is fun (especially with the minotaur's axe), the open world is huge and full, and the story is actually kind of compelling. Hunting down cultists is worth the price of admission alone.
9/10
beating the game and exploring the world apparently took me 160 hours lmao
