BONUS REVIEW: Muse/"Black Holes and Revelations" (2006) REVISITED
http://musiccouldbebetter.blogspot.com/2010/03/my-computer-has-virus-by-fuck-my-life.html

BASICALLY I NEED TO KILL AN HOUR
SO HERE WE ARE NIGS

I don't remember most of BHAR. I mostly just remember the big three (Supermassive Black Hole, Starlight, Knights of Cydonia), so I'm revisiting this motherfucker.

As a summary:
Showbiz: Great debut
Origin of Symmetry: Classic
Absolution: Also a classic
Black Holes and Revelations: ???
The Resistance: Pile of shit
The Second Law: Pretty good sometimes
Drones: Overblown, trying way too hard

The album opens with Take a Bow, which was a horrible decision. It's an incredibly pretentious song that leads into The Resistance very well. Whoever decided to open the album with this song should be fired. I don't care if it was Matt Bellamy himself.

The second track is Starlight, which would have made a pretty great opener. The piano part is memorable, and the song's pretty catchy, if you're into that.
They followed that with Supermassive Black Hole, which makes it seem like they knew Take a Bow was absolute shit and were saying "hey wait listen to the album see two of our best songs back-to-back". This would also have worked as an opener, really.

Map of the holy shit fuck you Matt Bellamy is pretty generic Muse shit. It's fine, but it's just so "whatever". Soldier's Poem is the same way, but in a different direction.

Having Invincible follow Soldier's Poem was a poor choice. Invincible is a far better song than Soldier's Poem, granted, but having two similar songs right in a row isn't optimal. Swap Soldier's Poem and Map, and the album is better off.
Invincible is one of the better songs on the album, however. It's a lot like Mercy from Drones, only less overblown, better-written, and not a pile of shit.

Assassin is next. It was featured in Guitar Hero: World Tour, and was a poor choice for the game (at least from a guitarist's perspective). It's a pretty good song, but nothing amazing.
Exo-Politics is a great song, except for the lyrics. This should be expected from a song with "politics" in the title.

the next two tracks are the worst on the album aside from take a bow BUT WHAT-FUCKING-EVER
The final track is Knights of Cydonia, which is an absolutely brilliant closer.

but wait there's a bonus track
i feel sorry for you if it's on your version of the album
it's a filler track placed right after a perfect closer

old score: 3/5
new score: 3/5

16 Dec 2015: Chris Cornell/"Scream" (2009)
http://musiccouldbebetter.blogspot.com/2010/02/piano-time-by-great.html

This album is notoriously bad. I'll probably love it.

okay nevermind what the fuck is this

The album cover is Chris Cornell leaping up, about to smash a guitar, in true rock and roll style.
This is some kind of electronic-ass pop album. And it's horrible. Why does this exist?

I almost thought Never Far Away was a decent song, but then the harmonies came in. why

http://musiccouldbebetter.blogspot.com/2015/12/julio-and-case-of-missing-ability-to.html

out of ideas before they even had any

A Moment Forever is the best song the band has ever done. You can tell from the first thirty seconds.

17 Dec 2015: Cheap Trick/"Sgt. Pepper Live" (2009)
http://musiccouldbebetter.blogspot.com/2010/02/i-cant-type-by-bengals.html

With a Little Help from My Friends loses a lot of its appeal when sung by anyone who isn't Ringo.
The band failed to rescue She's Leaving Home from being a filler track. Shame.

The best version of Mr. Kite will always be the Love version. The circus solos sound kind of weak on this one.
The singuy can't hit the notes in Lovely Rita. Shame.

Hearing A Day in the Life without the run-out groove is always strange. never could be any other way
Hearing Golden Slumbers/Carry That Weight/The End without the rest of the medley is just sad.

pretty good but nothing revolutionary

18 Dec 2015: Cage the Elephant/"Tell Me I'm Pretty" (2015)
http://musiccouldbebetter.blogspot.com/2015/12/julio-and-case-of-missing-elephant-by.html

This album came out today. The last two albums from this band were pretty bad. Let's see if they learned from their mistakes (I doubt it).

It's a lot better than Melophobia. I also want to say it's better than (or at least on par with) Thank You Happy Birthday.

okay so
The title track is a classic. It is not based on Edvard Grieg's In the Hall of the Mountain King, but the track before it, Prelude to Madness, is.

19 Dec 2015: Dio/"Master of the Moon" (2004)
http://musiccouldbebetter.blogspot.com/2010/02/fuck-you-blade-by-fuck-off.html

no clue why i was mad at black

This is the last Dio album, so let's just get it done.
The album opens with a classic Craig Goldy riff. One More for the Road might legitimately be Dio's best song since the '80s.

Against all odds (take a look at me now), Dio ends his namesake band with their best album.

This is legitimately the best album Tom Petty ever released. It ends on the worst song for some reason, though.

21 Dec 2015: Quiet Riot/"Quiet Riot II" (1978)
http://musiccouldbebetter.blogspot.com/2010/02/uninspired-review-by-jake-cole-adjutant.html

The second and final Quiet Riot album with Randy Rhoads. It, of course, was only released in Japan (at least that's what I thought).
The first track, Slick Black Cadillac, was later rerecorded for Metal Health, their international debut. I don't like it.

This was recommended to me by someone, but it wasn't anyone here so I don't feel bad about forgetting who it was.
I've been having a lot of success with metal lately, so I figured it was a good time for this.

kind of generic really, but the last four tracks are pretty good

23 Dec 2015: Chris Cornell/"Higher Truth" (2015)
http://musiccouldbebetter.blogspot.com/2015/12/julio-and-case-of-missing-awareness-by.html

It's that time of year again; when I try and review as many 2015 albums as I can before the year ends.

As far as Chris Cornell's solo albums go:
Euphoria Morning and Carry On were great, but Euphoria Morning moreso. It was pretty much exactly what I wanted.
Scream was absolutely terrible. It was weird-ass pop-ass electric shit that made no sense for Cornell to be doing. At the best of times, it was merely "bad".
Higher Truth is a bit country-tinged. Well, the only reason I don't say it's full-on country music is because Cornell's voice is so un-country. Despite the idea sounding strange, it actually works. Unlike Scream, I actually believe this album is what Cornell wanted to do.

It's probably my album of the year 2015, since there's barely any competition.

23 Dec 2015: Billy Joel/"The Bridge" (1986)
http://musiccouldbebetter.blogspot.com/2010/02/orange-no-assraping-by-dora-explorer.html

If I had heard Running on Ice in 2010, it would have been on every Rock Band 3/4 list I'd ever made.

Cyndi Lauper is one of the worst singers in the history of music. I can't stand her.
Her appearance on this album is probably her most tolerable, however.

24 Dec 2015: Yngwie J. Malmsteen/"Inspiration" (1996)
http://musiccouldbebetter.blogspot.com/2010/02/headache-by-me.html

This is a covers album. I thought it had his cover of Gimme Gimme Gimme on it, but I was mistaken.

It begins with a cover of Carry on Wayward Son, where Yngwie wanks all over the solo and ruins the song. Sweet.
The cover of Pictures of Home is good, but it's played really straight, and just ends up being an inferior version of the original. Shame about the false ending.

Manic Depression and Spanish Castle Magic here makes me realise just how important Hendrix was. Not just his guitar-playing, but his voice. Yngwie is singing this one, and he does not at all capture the feeling Hendrix did. Hendrix's vocals were perfect for his music, and I really don't think anyone else would work for his songs.
The cover of Child in Time, however, is better than the original by virtue of not being absolute shit.

25 Dec 2015: Ringo Starr/"Postcards from Paradise" (2015)
http://musiccouldbebetter.blogspot.com/2015/12/julio-and-case-of-missing-hanukkah-by.html

What is more Hanukkan than a Ringo Starr album?
Like with most Ringo efforts, this album was made with a little help from his friends, including Joe Walsh, Todd Rundgren, and Gregg Rollie.

The title track is chock-full of references to The Beatles songs, if you're into that.

This is just such a nice album. I like it a lot. It's nothing groundbreaking, but I didn't expect it to be.

25 Dec 2015: The Cars/"Shake it Up" (1981)
http://musiccouldbebetter.blogspot.com/2010/02/over-by-under.html

The Cars are my father's favourite band. What's more Hanukkan than family, right?
The title track was a hit, I believe. I hear it on the radio all the time anyway. I think it's one of the band's better songs.

Shame the last several tracks on the album are filler.

http://musiccouldbebetter.blogspot.com/2015/12/julio-and-case-of-missing-rewards-by.html

A Frank Sinatra covers album by Bob Dylan. Yeah.
Dylan's voice has improved with age, if you can believe it. He really sells these songs in a way he couldn't have fifty years ago.

26 Dec 2015: Incubus/"Fungus Amongus" (1995)
http://musiccouldbebetter.blogspot.com/2010/02/gerald1-by-gerald1.html

Incubus are one of those bands I went HAM on in the first wave of reviews, so I might as well finish the discography (two albums including this one left to go).

This one is a lot different than the direction the band would eventually take.
It's like a shittier Faith No More.

Psychopsilocybin and Hilikus are good, though.

27 Dec 2015: Motorhead/"Bad Magic" (2015)
http://musiccouldbebetter.blogspot.com/2015/12/julio-and-case-of-missing-danny-boy-by.html

I wish they'd recorded this album thirty years ago. If not for the old man lethargy in Lemmy's voice, this would easily be the best Motorhead album. Well, it still is, but you know.

The cover of Sympathy for the Devil is neat, if nothing else.
